Atlanta Meal Deal: Scramble Gamble at Pacci

Tuesday July 14, 2009

A fun meal deal came my way today. Pacci Ristorante, new on the Midtown dining scene, is giving you a 50/50 shot at free brunch!

From July 18 through August 30, dine at Pacci on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., order from the Scramble Gamble menu, and you've got the chance to receive your dishes for free. At the end of your meal, a Pacci employee flips a coin while you call heads of tails, determining whether you pay the bill or get your breakfast for free!

This is some serious gourmet breakfast too, the menu includes items like mushroom frittata with fresh goat cheese, the Midtown Bene, salmon with caper, egg, onion, cream cheese and crostini or ricotta pancakes with caramelized banana syrup. Regular prices of these dishes range from $8 to $12, so even if you have to pay, its not such a bad deal.

Pacci Ristorante is located at 866 West Peachtree Street NW in Midtown. For more information, call 678-412-2402.

Last year the Dogwood Festival kicked off Spring in Piedmont Park with fair food, art, music and fun. The 2010 dates were recently announced, assuring us all that the show will go on - at Piedmont Park, for those afraid of another Lenox relapse - next April 16 - 18, 2010!

Farewell to Francoeur

Sunday July 12, 2009

This past Friday, everyone's favorite hometown hero Braves player, Jeff Francoeur, was traded to the New York Mets. Francoeur started strong, hitting a home run his first time up to bat at The Ted, but has struggled to live up to his "first-timer's luck" for the past two seasons. He was recently sent back to the Minors to brush up on his skills, a move his teammates say could have negatively impacted his psyche.

Francouer, letting his local loyalty show, told the AJC, “I never wanted it to happen this way. … You can imagine getting traded, but you never imagine getting traded to your biggest rival.”

Francouer will return to Turner Field on Thursday, bearing his New York colors, as the Braves take on the Mets at 7 p.m..

Local Benefit to Support The Georgia Theater

Thursday July 9, 2009

UGA fans and alums, surely you've all heard about the sad fire a few weeks ago at the beloved Georgia Theater in Athens. This building is an Athens landmark, home to many shows and also the best place to watch the football game on the big screen if you can't score a ticket.

While the walls are still standing, the interior is almost completely destroyed. Not going down without a fight, the team behind the theater is bracing for the long and expensive rebuilding process. To help them out, local Buckhead restaurant The Taco Stand, which also has Athens locations, is holding an Atlanta area benefit concert. This Saturday, July 11, at 7 p.m., head to Taco Stand for live music from Athens bands, raffles, giveaways, and of course beer and tacos. A portion of all sales and raffle tickets will go to the rebuilding to The Georgia Theater.

A Moment in Atlanta History

Wednesday July 8, 2009

I love learning new things about Atlanta - anything from the next big restaurant opening to stories of Atlanta 100 years ago. Today another great local blog, Pecanne Log, provided us with a brief rundown (complete with vintage postcards!) on what used to take place where we now flock to shop at Whole Foods on Ponce de Leon.

This shopping center site is rich in Atlanta history. It used to be a man-made lake with summer homes (Yes, it is right in the middle of the city, but remember, Inman Park is also Atlanta's first "suburb"). It was also home to The Atlanta Crackers baseball team. I knew a bit about them, but never knew where the field was (how could you? Its a shopping mall now!). Back in 1903, it was known as Ponce de Leon Park, "The Coney Island of Atlanta." Sounds like a fun and crazy place!

While I do enjoy being able to find exotic veggies and sushi grade tuna just a few miles from my house, it makes you a little sad to look at a parking lot and think about what an interesting Atlanta landmark it used to be. Check out the post with pictures on Pecanne Log.

Peachtree Road Race Times Available Online

Tuesday July 7, 2009

Maybe when you were trying to catch your breath at the end of the long, hot Peachtree Road Race, somehow your finishing time slipped your mind. Or perhaps you want to look up your friend's times so you can brag about how speedy you are and mock them endlessly. Whatever your needs are, the AJC has a nifty tool to look up anyone's race results online. Enjoy!

Atlanta Mom Fights to Keep Teen Drivers Safer

Sunday July 5, 2009

Susie Kessler is an Atlanta mom on a mission. The AJC ran an interesting Q&A session with this Kennesaw mom who's urging legislators to mandate that teen drivers (or really, anyone new to driving) sport stickers or decals announcing to the world they are "newly licensed." Kessler believes this warning will help other drivers on the road be more understanding and also allow them a little more space on the road.

Through her non-profit, Caution and Courtesy Driver Alliance, Kessler has sold about 15,000 new driver magnets to households across the country - and her own 16-year-old son, of course, has a decal on his own car. She's now working with a Georgia senator to bring forward a bill that would mandate the stickers for new drivers. This, she says, would keep kids from being embarrassed, since everyone would be required to have one.

Car accidents are the #1 killer of teens in the United States. Do you think new driver decals will help keep kids safe on the roads?

Find out more about Kessler's mission in the AJC.

Fourth of July Fun for Little Ones

Thursday July 2, 2009

Looking for an event just for kids this Fourth of July? There are plenty of options around town, but one that may be right for you is the Radio Disney celebration at Atlantic Station. This event is from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., so it is perfect for younger kids who may be scared of the nighttime fireworks or tuckered out by nightfall.

The Radio Disney Road Crew will descend on Atlantic Station with old fashioned fun and games including clowns, face painting, caricatures, a cake walk, relay races and live music from Atlanta band The Well Reds. The best part? All activities are free!

Peachtree Road Race Street Closures

Wednesday July 1, 2009
The AJC Peachtree Road Race is a beloved Fourth of July tradition in Atlanta. It winds through Buckhead and Midtown from Lenox Square Mall all the way to Piedmont Park. However, it also creates a traffic headache and can throw a wrench in your travel plans if you forget to plan ahead. Essentially, you'll want to avoid Peachtree as much as possible on July 4th, there will be rolling closures throughout the day. In addition, there is an area of Piedmont Rd near Ralph McGill that will actually be closed as early as July 2. The AJC has an interactive map of street closures to keep you updated.
