Weekend Getaway: North Georgia Mountains

The time of year is perfect for a weekend getaway to North Georgia. Less than two hours outside the city are the popular mountain destinations of Helen, Elijay and the Blue Ridge region.

Helen is a mecca for Oktoberfest fans, with a month-long celebration in the little Alpine village. If you haven't experienced Helen, it is a must-see town that looks to be straight out of a fairy tale or an amusement park. There is food, drink, live music and dancing throughout October.

Ellijay and Blue Ridge are great destinations for getting away from the city and enjoying the fall, with dramatic vistas of the turning leaves. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, there are many opportunities for hiking, water sports and other activities. Another popular attraction during the fall is apple picking. The area is full of pick-your-own orchards that also have fun activities like hay rides and corn mazes.
