Cheap Eats
You will not spend most of your time eating in the school cafeteria, trust me. Certainly that would be the most cost effective way to go, but campus food gets real old real fast. Still, don't blow all your loan money
on fast food. Here are some popular cheap eats in Atlanta:
- Eats: Cheap food that's actually good, including pastas, vegetarian options, and their jerk chicken is considered to be some of the best in Atlanta.
- Doc Chey's: With their mantra of "Peace, love, noodles", and two Atlanta area locations, one right near Emory University, this is the perfect college crowd hangout. Cheap noodle bowls, soup bowls, plenty of vegetarian options, and fresh, good quality food. Nothing on the menu over $10.
-
Everybody's Pizza: Casual and friendly pizza parlor with two locations, one near Emory University and the other in the heart of the Virginia Highlands, near many popular bars. Huge portions, reasonable prices, and custom made pizzas and salads make this a winner with students. Limited delivery service also available.
- Mellow Mushroom Pizza: Longtime college fave for pizza. They have dozens of Atlanta area locations.
- The Majestic: One of the most popular places to nurse a hangover in Atlanta. Greasy spoon diner with a colorful staff and even more interesting patrons.
- Krispy Kreme: Atlanta's doughnut king, with several locations throughout the city. You'll have to wait until October 2003 to get the hot, fresh treats from the most popular location, on Ponce de Leon Avenue, as they are completely renovating the place.
- Waffle House: Another favorite spot to sober up in Atlanta, Waffle House has dozens of locations throughout the metro Atlanta area. Scattered, smothered, and covered, anyone?
- The Varsity: Most younger Atlantans don't get what the fascination of this drive-in burger joint is, while old timers reflect on the good old days. The original place is located conveniently near Georgia Tech. The Frosty Orange drink is one of their trademarks. There are smaller locations around the metro Atlanta area.
- The Busy Bee Cafe: located conveniently near two historically black colleges, The Busy Bee Cafe's soul food draws in everyone from students, to cops, to politicians. One can get a full meal for under $10. Their fried chicken is loved by locals.
- Apres Diem: For the poets and artists in the college crowd, nothing beats Apres Diem, the cool bistro in the Midtown Promenade shopping center. Good bistro fare for very reasonable prices, nice wine and beer list, a dessert case to die for, and a great lounge as well.
