The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Makes Music for Kids

From , former Contributing Writer

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's mission is to be a "vigorous part of the cultural fabric of our community," and part of that cultural fabric is to introduce kids to great music. Families have several opportunities to enjoy the music of the highly-regarded ASO.

Family Concerts

Each ASO concert season includes three or four family concerts. Concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 1:30 and 3:30. The musicians, dancers, and storytellers make the experience captivating for even young children. Past concerts have included Bach to the Future, Classical Clown, Halloween, and Aladdin and the Arabian Nights.

You can purchase individual tickets for $15 or $20, but you can often find coupon codes online to bring the price down to $10.

Family Subscriptions

If you purchase a subscription for all of the family concerts in a season, you'll save money over the individual ticket prices. You'll also be able to purchase tickets to ASO Kid's Christmas and get a free membership to Crazy for Classical, the ASO Kids' Club.

Concerts for Young People

Kids in grades kindergarten-8th grade can take a field trip to a school-day ASO concert through the Concerts for Young People Program. These concerts are both fun and educational as they use music, dance, and motion to introduce students to the instruments in the symphony.  Teachers (including homeschooling parents) get a CD of the music and a teacher's guide. The cost is $6.50 per person, but schools can apply for grants for the K-2 Symphony Street program.

Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra

Serious young musicians ages 13-18 can audition to be part of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. If accepted, the student must pay tuition, but scholarships are available. The AYSO performs three Sunday concerts each year at Symphony Hall, giving children the opportunity to see young people excel at musical performance.
