Groundhog Day gives us the chance to find out if we'll be stuck with six more weeks of winter or enjoy an early spring! You can choose one of these activities to celebrate Groundhog Day with your kids.
Punxsutawney Phil may get all the press, but Georgia has its own prognosticating groundhog: General Beauregard Lee. Beau lives at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, GA, in a Southern-style white mansion complete with columns, a water fountain, a satellite dish, and his own front yard. According to Yellow River, Beau's outdoor living explains why he is a more accurate forecaster than Phil, who lives in the town library and eats ice cream.
Each February 2 the nature preserve fills with visitors waiting to find out if Beau will see his shadow. Admission is free from 6:00-8:00 a.m. If you'd like to stay for the day to feed and visit the 600 other animals at Yellow River, admission prices are $8.00 for ages 12 and up; $7.00 for ages 2-11; and free for children under 2 with a paying adult.
Yellow River Game Ranch is located at 4525 Highway 78, Lilburn, GA. Call 770.972.6643 for more information.
Another unique, free Groundhog Day activity is the Atlanta Jugglers' Groundhog Day Festival. Jugglers perform during the first weekend of February, and the competition is at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winner goes home with a groundhog shaped trophy appropriately known as the PHIL.
Admission is free to the public and $15.00 for competing jugglers.
The festival is located at Yaarab Shrine Center Recreation Building, 400 Ponce de Leon Avenue, Atlanta, GA.
