2009 Memorial Day Weekend in Atlanta

Memorial Day marks, for many, the first long weekend of 2009 and calls for celebrations, barbeques and, of course, remembering America's Troops. We've put together a list of some of the exciting events going on this Memorial Day Weekend.
All Weekend Long:

Atlanta Jazz Festival
Grant Park
This annual three-day festival in Grant Park is regarded as one of the country’s largest free jazz festivals. The event features world renowned jazz artists in a multi-cultural celebration. The festival is free. No outside food allowed, but there will be plenty of vendors onsite.

Memorial Day Weekend Salute to the Troops
Stone Mountain Park
This three-day celebration of American spirit, which salutes our troops and their families, is Atlanta's largest Memorial Day weekend celebration.In addition to all the regular Stone Mountain attractions, there will also be live music and the famous laser show will feature a special tribute to the troops. Military discounts available. Laser show and music included in $10 entry fee, other activities for an additional fee.

Thursday, May 21, 2009:

Memorial Dedication - Millennium Gate (Atlantic Station)
395 17th St. N.W., Atlanta
The Millenium Gate will hold a memorial dedication ceremony to honor Atlanta native Sgt. Preston Tribble Jr., killed in action on his second tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam in 1969. The ceremony will feature military speakers, aircraft flyovers and a patriotic concert. This is a free event. 9:30 a.m.

Friday, May 22, 2009:

Gwinnett Daily Post Memorial Day Concert & Celebration
Town Center Park, Suwannee
There will be a free outdoor performance by The Gwinnett Community Band and the Sugar Hill LDS Choir and a parachute demonstration by The Silver Wings. This is a free event but attendees are encouraged to bring canned food donations. 7 p.m.

Sunday, May 24, 2009:

Veteran's Remembrance Day
Atlanta History Center
Throughout the day, visitors to the History Center interact with both veterans and living history interpreters who represent the various branches of the United States Armed Forces. Both share stories about battles and military strategies of the various wars through displays of authentic dress, equipment, and vehicles. Free with History Center admission.

2nd Annual Rockin Blues, Brews & Barbecue Fest
Park Tavern
500 10th St NE, Atlanta
Exactly what it sounds like, beer, bands and BBQ as only Park Tavern can do it! Feast on BBQ platters, ribs and fried oysters. $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Free admission with military ID. 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. This event is 21+

Monday, May 25, 2009:

Memorial Day National Moment of Remembrance
A National Moment of Remembrance takes place every year at 3 p.m. local time. The National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress, asks Americans wherever they are on Memorial Day to pause in an act of national unity for one minute to remember what Memorial Day is really about.

Roswell Remembers
This non-political, non-commercial ceremony honoring veterans and the sacrifices they made is Georgia's largest Memorial Day Ceremony. Draws over 6,000 people to honor the troops. Food vendors and music in addition to the traditional military program. Located at the City Hall complex just one mile from the Roswell Square.

Atlanta's Official Memorial Day Ceremony
The Capitol Building
7 Martin Luther King Drive, Atlanta
The State celebrates our veterans with a ceremony at the Capitol featuring Governor Sonny Perdue as the host. Guests include Gen. Charles C. Campbell, commander, Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, and Brig. Gen. Maria Britt, commander, Georgia Army National Guard. Music will be provided by the Army Ground Forces Band. This is a free event.

Annual DeKalb County Memorial Day Service
Liane Levetan Park at Brook Run
4770 N. Peachtree Road, Dunwoody
Service begins in the theater with guest speaker, the Rev. Robert Certain, and music by the Callanwolde Band and moves outside to the Veterans Memorial.
