With global warming and going green constantly in the headlines, Earth Day is a bigger holiday than ever. Each April 22, Earth Day is held to bring awareness to issues affecting the planet. Many events and activities for Earth Day 2012 are happening around Atlanta.
The Georgia Aquarium will celebrate Earth Day 2012 from April 21 - 22 with a number of activites at the aquarium. On Earth Day, Radio Disney will be on site to get the party going. There will also be giveaways, activities like a scavenger hunt and kid-friendly attractions including arts and crafts. All activities are included with aquarium admission.
On April 21, they will host the Get to Know Your Wild Neighbors Festival, which is part of a larger initiative to get kids engaged with the outdoors. As a part of this initiative, children can submit original works of art, writing, photography, video or music inspired by the natural world. Art, writing, photography, video and music entries can be submitted online at Get-To-Know.org between April 7 - July 16, 2012. Contest winners will receive prizes, including an opportunity to attend an Art and Nature Camp at a National Park in Canada.
Gerogia Tech will host an Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 20, with live music from local bands including The Champagne Room, Nigel Wright and Dr. Dr. Mr. MD. There will also be appearances by Earth-friendly characters Captain Planet and Reynard the Fox. There are 70 exhibitors, eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, a clothing swap, an office supply exchange, and even organic popcorn!
On Sunday, April 22, Decatur will host Earth Day activities including a parade through Oakhurst (at 12:30) and a festival with crafts, food vendors, a cake baking contest, live music and more. Bring phonebooks to be recycled. 1-4 p.m. at the Oakhurst Garden at the corner of Oakview and South McDonough.
EarthShare of Georiga will hold an Earth Day celebration with music, dancing, food and drink at King Plow Arts Center in West Midtown on April 18. There will be a silent auction with deals on eco-friendly products and even eco-vacations! Tickets to the benefit are $60 per person, and proceeds benefit EarthShare of Georgia, Georgia’s only dedicated environmental fund.
100 Mile Dinner at Park 75
On April 22, Park 75 (located within the Four Seasons in Midtown) has created a special, three-course 100 Mile Dinner. Priced at $100 per couple, all aspects of the dinner will come from within 100 miles of your dining table. Candles from a local purveyor will be the only light in the restaurant and entertainment will be provided by a local musician.
At 6 p.m. the evening will commence with a cocktail reception in Park 75’s kitchen. Snack on Georgia shrimp and local cheese while tasting both signature 100 Mile Cocktails. Move into the candlelit dining room for a 3-course menu that will guide you through the best of local, seasonal flavors.
