Top 5 Things to Do- New Year's Eve in Atlanta

From Joy Johnston, for About.com

There are plenty of ways to ring in the new year in Atlanta, from the Peach Drop in Downtown to parties throughout the city. The most popular parties and events sell out quickly so it's best to get tickets early.

1. The Peach Drop

The traditional way to celebrate New Year's Eve in Atlanta is by attending the Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta. Tens of thousands pour into the streets to watch the giant, illuminated peach countdown the last minutes of the old year, then kickoff the new year with a fireworks display. Live musical performances help keep the crowd in the mood all night long.

2. New Year's Eve Parties

All of Atlanta's high-profile social organizations host lively New Year's Eve celebrations, most at upscale hotels in the Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead neighborhoods of Atlanta. Most offer all-inclusive packages, meaning food, booze, and entertainment is covered for the entire evening through the next morning of the new year. If you like to ring in the new year with a big crowd, these parties are not to be missed.

3. Dining in Atlanta on New Year's Eve

Those not into the party scene often choose a fine-dining restaurant in Atlanta to ring in the new year with that special someone. Most restaurants offer a special New Year's Eve menu, many with complimentary champagne toasts at midnight. Often, for those who make dinner reservations at a restaurant located in a hotel, package deals are available, making it convenient and safe to imbibe, knowing your room for the night is just an elevator ride away.

4. Atlanta Hotels on New Year's Eve

Whether attending an event like the Peach Drop, dining out at an Atlanta restaurant, or throwing your own party, many choose to reserve a hotel room or suite on New Year's Eve. Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead are the most coveted areas for NYE hotel reservations, so if you procrastinate, you might have to settle for something OTP (outside the perimeter), which is not ideal if you will be required to drive after celebrating.

5. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra New Year's Eve Concert

Another longtime tradition, the ASO concert is a classy way to ring in the new year. The program changes annually, but usually a lighthearted, familiar set of tunes is featured for the evening, with a balloon drop and complimentary champagne toast to round out a stylish end to the old year, and a warm welcome to the new one.
