Visit Dekalb-Peachtree Airport for Free Aviation Fun in Atlanta

Atlanta's second airport offers a free, fun family activity for kids

From

Do your kids love airplanes? DeKalb-Peachtree Airport is a great place to take the family - it's one of the best-kept secrets in Atlanta! Eat, play, and watch the planes take off and land.

DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK) is the second-busiest airport in Georgia. It acts as a reliever airport for Hartsfield-Jackson, and while it has no commercial flights, it houses hundreds of aircraft and sees over 200,000 take-offs and landings each year. Security restrictions make it difficult to watch the planes at Hartsfield, so PDK is the place to see them up close. Parking is free.

Activities

PDK is home to an aviation park for kids. An airplane-themed playground is close to the runway, so kids can climb, ride, and play while watching the planes. Kids will love the arched monkey bars and the rocking airplanes. Close to the playground is a hangar-style pavilion with a restroom - great for birthday parties or picnics. You can also watch the planes from a special viewing area near the playground.

Food

Once you've worked up an appetite, take the family to Downwind Restaurant located in the airport administration building. You'll still be able to see the planes as you enjoy salads, Greek entrees, and grilled favorites. Downwind is able to host kids' birthday parties at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

Downwind is open 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. M-F; 12 noon - 10 p.m. on Saturdays; and closed on Sundays.
