Mentally Incontinent by Joe the Peacock Atlanta Book Review

About.com Rating four out of Five

From Joy Johnston, for About.com

Mentally Incontinent is a unique collection of personal essays by Atlanta freelance writer Joe the Peacock that were originally published on the Internet. After readers voted on each story on mentallyincontinent.com, the top stories made it into the print edition. And if you have a wicked sense of humor, this collection is definitely for you.

The book features 12 "round winning" stories, a wildcard round story, three book only stories, 2 Guest Chapters, and appropriately enough, "The Final Story." (Never fear, Joe the Peacock fans, he is already hard at work on a second book.) Each entry comes with a bit of a backstory or comment.

Some of my favorite stories include "The Wal-Mart Story", "Late Night Adventures at Kroger", "The Cows...They Talk!", "I Think I'm Turning Japanese", and "I've Never Really Been a Fan of Fish". Many of the stories take place in metro Atlanta. Joe the Peacock is pretty much your average guy, who runs into some pretty interesting situations, and has the knack for writing about them in a witty but authentic manner. Peacock rolls out tales like you'd expect to hear at your neighborhood bar over a couple of cold ones. His writing can invoke empathy and guffaws all in the same sentence.

Certainly, Peacock's writing and sense of humor is not for everyone. If casual profanity and sexual scenarios make you uncomfortable, then this book wasn't meant for you. Some might find the writing a bit sophomoric, but that is part of the charm. Not everything has to be Shakespeare in order to be brilliant. "Mentally Incontinent" is a hillarious

collection of tales by someone with a keen, if a bit twisted insight into his daily life. The popularity of Peacock's writings clearly illustrates the power of the Internet. Now that he has established a loyal online audience at MentallyIncontinent.com, his second book should be even more well-received.
